Nina Svetlanova:

Warner Classics has produced a unique collection. Admirers of Evgeny Svetlanov are of course familiar with his numerous recordings, as he completed over 300. However the publication of the CDs was always rather chaotic. There was no full, comprehensive collection of the great maestro’s recordings, and music lovers mainly remember the extraordinary energy devoted by Svetlanov to his “Anthology of Russian music”, in which Russians take great pride and which has never been published in its entirety. This collection also includes recordings by Svetlanov which were hitherto unknown, for example the oratorios of Shaporin, Taneyev and Kostalsky. The British remember Svetlanov’s unrelenting efforts to promote the work of the famous composer Edward Elgar. The Swedes recollect that Svetlanov championed many of the works of their most famous romantic composers, namely Berwald and Alfven.
In Moscow, his concert performances of French Classical music have become legendary: they included Honegger’s Joan at the Stake, Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphony, as well as works by Chausson, Roussel and Dukas rarely performed in their native land. Evgeny Svetlanov was one of the few Russian conductors who recorded the complete symphonies of Mahler or Villa-Lobos’ remarkable symphonic poem for voice The Amazon Forest. This collection also reveals Evgeny Svetlanov as a pianist, chamber musician and composer.

I am delighted that Evgeny Svetlanov’s work has at long last been published in such a varied and structured form. I hope that this collection will become a gift for all those who love, understand and respect this wonderful, unique maestro.
I would like to wish you an enjoyable and perhaps unexpected encounter with Evgeny Svetlanov, whose work has now become a universal artistic legacy.
