1) Organisation :

The organisation, called the «Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition», a non profit-making organisation (hereinafter the « Competition »), is comprised of a Board of Directors, an Executive Committee, an Honorary Members’ Committee, a Jury and a Secretariat. The Secretariat is based in Montpellier.

2) Conditions of admission:

ELIGIBILITY
1. The Competition is open to musicians of all nationalities who have completed their training. Applications will be considered regardless of candidates’ political persuasion, creed or national origin.

2. Candidates should be born between 1 July 1970 and 2 July 1990.

HOW TO APPLY
Please, download and complete the "Application form"

1. Candidates should send completed application to the Secretariat enclosing other documents and material as indicated below:
a. Application form
b. Curriculum vitae
c. List of works chosen by candidate (3 pieces)
d. Video recording: recording on VHS video cassette or digital video cassette
e. Three black and white or colour photographs (full face, 5 cm wide x 5 cm high). Photographs must be recent (taken within the last 6 months). One photograph should be affixed to application form
f. One photograph on glazed paper (9x12 cm in size) for inclusion in the competition programme
g. Photocopy of candidate’s passport
   
2. Candidates submitting false information or material will be disqualified.

3. Candidates’ documents, video recording and other material will not be returned.

4. For further details, please go to section entitled “Comments regarding Applications".

COMMENTS REGARDING APPLICATIONS
1. Curriculum vitae
The CV should specify candidate’s previous experience and career as a musician: studies, names of professors, highlights of musical activities, competitions in which he/she has participated, prizes won, etc…

2. List of candidate’s chosen pieces (3 works)
Please, download and complete the form “Chosen pieces”

a. Please go to section entitled “Evaluation method /Set pieces, pieces chosen by candidate”.
b. The candidate must choose and specify the three pieces he wishes to conduct during the final round. The selected pieces must either be symphonies or orchestral music with no solo part for voice or instrument, no choir and and with no more than three musicians per wind instrument desk, and four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, a tuba and six percussion instruments (including cymbals) for the brass section. A harp will also be allowed.
c. The candidate must not choose pieces set for first and second qualifying rounds and final round mentioned in this brochure.
d. Titles of pieces chosen by candidates must be specified in the original language and in English, indicating names of composers, opus numbers and name of version.
   
3. Video recording
Please, download and complete the form “Video Material”

a. This must show footage of candidate conducting as well as members of orchestra. Footage of candidate should preferably be shown full face (i.e. as seen by orchestra).
b. All recording systems are acceptable, provided they are on VHS video cassettes or mini digital video cassettes (mini-DV or DVD).
c. The candidate should clearly indicate titles of recorded pieces and date and length of recording on the specially provided form. Only recordings subsequent to 1 January 2001 will be accepted.
d. The candidate will choose from the following ensembles: symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra, ensemble of more than two pianos.
e. The competition organisers guarantee that the video recording provided by the candidate will be used for selection purposes only.
f. The candidate should obtain prior authorisation where necessary regarding copyright and/or footage of this recording.
g. The video cassette supplied by the candidate will not be returned.
   
APPLICATION PERIOD
The completed application, including video recordings, should be sent no later than 28 February 2010 to the competition Secretariat (date will be based on postmark)

SELECTION BASED ON APPLICATION AND VIDEO RECORDING
1. The President of the Jury and the Artistic Director will either accept or reject candidates for the first qualifying round after reviewing applications and video recordings.

2. Results of the selection process will be sent to candidates before 31 March 2010.

3. No reason for accepting or rejecting applications will be given.

APPLICATION FEES AFTER SELECTION
1. Candidates admitted to first qualifying round after selection based on application and video recording must pay an application fee in order to take part in the competition.

2. The application fee is 300 euros.
This fee is strictly non–refundable.
Fee payment should be made by transfer to the Competition’s bank account.

3. Applications will be cancelled in the event of failure to pay the application fee by the required date (before 16 april 2010).

3) The Competition:

ROUNDS
The competition includes first and second qualifying rounds followed by the final round.

DATES
First qualifying round: Monday 10 May and Tuesday 11 May 2010
Second qualifying round: Tuesday 11 May and Wednesday 12 May 2010
Final round: Wednesday 12 May and Thursday 13 May 2010.

VENUE
The qualifying rounds (first and second rounds) of the competition and the final round will be held in public at the Corum Opéra Berlioz with the Orchestre National de Montpellier.

GALA CONCERT
The second Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition prizewinners’ Gala concert will be held at the Corum Opéra Berlioz on Saturday 15 May at 20.00.

Rehearsals will be held at the Opéra Berlioz theatre on Friday 14 May from 9.30 to 10.10, from 10.30 to 12.00 and from 14.00 to 17.00

Orchestre National de Montpellier


ORCHESTRA
The Orchestre National de Montpellier (Lawrence Foster, Music Director) will be the Competition’s official orchestra.

EVALUATION METHOD – SET PIECES AND PIECES CHOSEN BY CANDIDATE
Each candidate must specify on the application form the piece he wishes to conduct for each qualifying round and the chosen piece

1. First qualifying round
20 minutes per participant
Set pieces (choose one piece from list below):
:
- Mozart: overture from "The Magic Flute"
- Brahms: Symphonie n°1, 1str movement
- Debussy: "La Mer", 2nd movement

2. Second qualifying round
30 minutes per participant
Set pieces (choose one piece from list below):

- Beethoven : Symphony n°5, 1st movement
- Strauss: "Till Eulenspiegel"
- Rachmaninov : "Isle of Dead"

and a compulsory piece:
accompaniment of an aria for Tenor or Soprano by Verdi or Puccini (to be specified)
plus one piece chosen by the candidate

3. Final round
1 hour 40 minutes per participant

A - Set pieces (both of them have to be prepared) :
Svetlanov: Spanish Scenes (Rhapsody for full symphony orchestra)
Tchaikovsky: Symphony no. 4, first movement

B - Pieces chosen by candidates:
The Executive Committee will select the piece to be conducted from the three symphonies or orchestral scores chosen by the competitor and submitted in the application: the works must be presented with no solo part for voice or instrument, , no choir and with no more than three musicians per wind instrument desk, and four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, a tuba and six percussion instruments (including cymbals) for the brass section. A harp will also be allowed.

DESK ARRANGEMENT

Only one saxophone will be allowed.
One piano, a celesta and organ with only two musicians for these three instruments.
The harpsichord will not be allowed.

ORDER OF PERFORMANCE

For the first and second qualifying rounds, the Executive Committee will draw lots in order to set the order of performance. The order of performance for the final round will be set by the competitors themselves who will draw lots after the announcement of the results of the second qualifying round.

4) Qualifying rounds:

FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND
Candidates selected for the first qualifying round are expected at the following time and venue in order to complete the required formalities:

Monday 10 May 2010, from 09.30 to12.00 and from 14.00 to 16.30
Tuesday 11 May: from 9.30 to 12.00


1. Date and order of performance will be announced.

2. Candidates will be required to supply evidence of payment of application fee.

3. Accommodation for candidates travelling from abroad will be provided at the organisers’ expense for the period spent participating in the competition.

SECOND QUALIFYING GROUND

Candidates selected for the second qualifying round should arrive at the time and venue indicated below:

Tuesday 11 May: 15.00 to 17.30
Wednesday 12 May: 14.00 to 16.30


1. Excerpts from pieces to be conducted will be indicated.

2. Candidates’ order of performance will be announced.

5) Final round:

Candidates selected for the final round are expected at the time and venue indicated below:

Wednesday 12 May: 20.00 to 22.30
Thursday 13 May: 9.30 to 12.00 and 14.00 to 16.00

6) Announcements of results :

1. The results of the first qualifying round will be displayed at the venue of the round following the jury’s deliberation on Tuesday 11 May 2010.

2. The results of the second qualifying round will be displayed at the venue of the round following the jury’s deliberation on Wednesday 12 May 2010.

3. The results of the final round will be displayed at the venue of the round following the jury’s deliberation on Thursday 13 May 2010.

7) Awards ceremony:

1. The awards ceremony will be held at the Gala Concert.

2. All finalists are required to attend.

8) Prizes :

Winners will be awarded First, Second and Third prizes and all other finalists will be awarded distinction.
In the event of a tie, the prize and cash award will not be shared but will be given in full to each of the laureates.
The Jury may decide not to award all the prizes if it feels that the competitors do not deserve them.

PRIZES
First Prize: € 15,000.with diploma
Second Prize: € 10,000.with diploma
Third Prize: € 5,000.with diploma

SPECIAL PRIZE FROM AUDIENCE
€ 5000.-
This prize may be awarded as an additional prize to a competitor.

SPECIAL PRIZE FROM THE ORCHESTRA
€ 3000.-
This prize may be awarded as an additional prize to a competitor.

9) Press relations and rights arising from competition:


RIGHTS ARISING FROM COMPETITION

1. Candidates will have to obtain prior authorisation from the Competition Secretariat for film and photo shots, or any interviews by competitors other than those planned by the organisers. Furthermore, they will be required to cooperate in all film, photo sessions and/or interviews planned by the Competition Secretariat.

2. 2. During the competition, the Executive Committee will claim all rights indicated below:
a. Sound and/or video recording, film shots
b. Radio and/or TV broadcast of the above items
c. Copy and/or sale of above items
   
Candidates may neither object nor claim any remuneration (this clause includes the press conference and the gala concert).

10) Insurance and compensation :

1. The Board of Directors and the Executive Committee will not be liable for accidents indicated below occurring during the Competition:
a. Damage to or loss of competitors’ belongings.
b. Physical, material or moral injury sustained by competitors
   
2. All candidates are therefore advised to make their own appropriate insurance arrangements.

11) Objections regarding the administration, selection and evaluation of the competition:

1. Decisions made by the Executive Committee regarding the administration of the competition and selection based on the application and video recording and the Jury’s decision on evaluation are final and irrevocable.

2. Candidates may not appeal against the above decisions.

12) Additions, cancellations, or changes regarding clauses of rules:

1. In order to ensure the smooth running of the competition, the Executive Committee may add, remove and/or change the rules even after they have been published.

2. If problems arise regarding points not covered by the rules, the competitors will be required to follow the decisions and rulings made by the Executive Committee.

13) Legal action:

Disputes arising from the competition may only be settled by a court of law in France.
