The friendship between Evgeny Svetlanov and David Oistrakh was profound. When the great violinist passed away on October 24, 1974, Svetlanov was deeply moved. He composed the Poem for Violin and Piano as a heartfelt tribute to Oistrakh’s artistry and his exceptional human qualities.

The Poem in Memory of David Oistrakh is a highly dramatic work. From afar, from nowhere, from the boundless Russian expanses, the orchestra begins to sound. Then, just as quietly and cautiously, the violin joins in. A very fragile and piercing melody is gently and tenderly supported by the orchestra, after which a melody of breathtaking beauty seems to grow, move toward us, and transform into the powerful sound of the entire orchestra together with the soloist.
