Joonas studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg with Ari Rasilainen and cello at the Hochschule für Musik Basel with Thomas Demenga. He has also participated in masterclasses with Neeme Järvi, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Mark Stringer, Ulrich Windfuhr, Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Hannu Lintu. He was selected for the LEAD! Foundation Excellence Platform for Young Artists, where he is mentored by Jukka-Pekka Saraste.

In 2023, Joonas won First Prize at the Città di Brescia – Giancarlo Facchinetti Conducting Competition and received a distinction at the 11th Grzegorz Fitelberg International Competition for Conductors.

He has conducted orchestras including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Kammerorchester Basel, Slovak Chamber Orchestra, Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, Filarmonica Bacău, Camerata Zürich, St. Michel Strings, Hradec Králové Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra Biel Solothurn, Bursa State Symphony Orchestra, the Presidential Symphony Orchestra Ankara and I Solisti Aquilani. These engagements have led to numerous invitations to return as a guest conductor. In 2024, he conducted the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

As an opera conductor, he has appeared with Opera Studio Würzburg and Opernkollektiv Zürich, where he conducted the world-première recording of Joachim Raff’s Die Eifersüchtigen for Naxos.

Alongside his conducting career, Joonas serves as Artistic Director of the Finnish concert series Feeling Blue & White in Basel, which he co-founded in 2014.
