José began his musical training studying piano and choral singing under the guidance of his mother, Ana Yara Campos. He later studied orchestral conducting with Claudio Cruz through a partnership with the São Paulo Youth Symphony Orchestra. He has participated in masterclasses with Marin Alsop, Arvo Volmer, Giancarlo Guerrero, Neil Thomson, Alexander Liebreich, Fabio Mechetti, Paavo Järvi and Leonid Grin. José holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition from São Paulo State University.

José was a fellow of two consecutive editions of the Campos do Jordão Winter Festival, where he won the Festival Conducting Prize in 2017. In 2021, José won First Prize at the 19th Tokyo International Conducting Competition.

In 2018/19 season, he became Guest Assistant Conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP). In 2019, he was a Conducting Fellow of the Järvi Academy Programme at the Pärnu Music Festival in Estonia.
Having joined the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra as Associate Conductor in 2020, José was promoted to Assistant Conductor in 2022. 

His recent engagements include the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, Hiroshima Symphony, Nagoya Philharmonic and the MÁV Symphony Orchestra in Budapest, as well as the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra (OSB), Paraná Symphony Orchestra and Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra (OSPA).
José is actively involved in the educational activities of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra, co-developing the Orchestra’s Young People’s Concert broadcast series across Brazil, Open-Air Concerts and other youth initiatives.
