Rui is currently completing his studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music under the guidance of Ole Kristian Ruud and Rolf Gupta. Prior to this, he studied for four years with the British conductor Timothy Henty and previously with the Portuguese conductors Alexandre Madeira and Marta Falcão.
He has participated in masterclasses with Jorma Panula, Johannes Schlaefli, Nicolás Pasquet, Lawrence Foster and Gustavo Gimeno. For the past two years,, he has been part of the Dirigentforum Junior, collaborating with conductors and soloists including Leif Ove Andsnes, Axel Kober, Eivind Aadland, Wolfram Christ, Stefan Dohr, Amalie Stalheim and Alf Årdal.
Rui currently holds the position of Assistant Conductor of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, where he works closely with its Chief Conductor, Andris Poga, and guest conductors including Andrew Manze, François Leleux, Jan Willem de Vriend and Kristian Sallinen.
In 2026, Rui is collaborating with the pianist Bernardo Santos on an international tour dedicated to João Domingos Bomtempo’s piano concertos, culminating in a recording project of his music.
Rui has worked with orchestras such as the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra, Amazonas Philharmonic Orchestra and Brazil National Theatre Symphony Orchestra.
In the 2026/27 season, he will conduct the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, Cairo Symphony Orchestra and Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, and participate in a masterclass with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and Paavo Järvi.
